Areas of Expertise


Dr. Dettling is fellowship trained and has extensive experience in the field of orthopedic surgery & sports medicine. He has extraordinary skills in the area of minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery. He specializes in complex and arthroscopic reconstruction of the shoulder, elbow and knee including soft tissue reconstructions, revision surgery and cartilage transplantation procedures. Dr. Dettling has published numerous articles in peer review journals regarding sports related shoulder and knee injuries and conditions. He actively lectures and instructs colleagues on conditions of the shoulder, elbow and knee as well as sports medicine topics. Dr. Dettling has vast experience in caring for patients and athletes of all ages and levels of activity as well as workers comp injuries.


Work Experience


Following the completion of his post-graduate training at the University of California,Irvine, Dr. Dettling completed an orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at the world famous Kerlan-Jobe OrthopedicClinic in Los Angeles, CA.

During his fellowship Dr. Dettling gained extensive experience in the prevention and treatment of sports related injuries by assisting the team physicians for the Los Angeles Dodgers (MLB), Los Angeles Lakers (NBA), Los Angeles Kings (NHL), Los Angeles Galaxy(MLS), Los Angeles Sparks (WNBA), Anaheim Angels (MLB) and Anaheim Mighty Ducks (NHL).

Dr. Dettling is the Medical Director and Head Team Physician for the Vegas Golden Knights and the Henderson Silver Knights.

He was also an assistant team physician for the University of Southern California and Loyola Marymount University Athletics. Following the completion of his orthopedic sports medicine fellowship, Dr. Dettling moved to the Las Vegas area where he has been in private practice since 1999.

Dr. Dettling is currently is consultation for numerous Southern Nevada high school football, basketball and baseball teams as well.

Education and Training


James Dettling, MD was born and raised in Woodland, CA., a small farming town in northern California. He ultimately graduated from Woodland High School in 1983, and attended the University of Southern California and graduated with a B.S. obtaining a degree in Exercise Science, in 1987.

He then completed his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C.; Dr. Dettling then went on to complete his orthopedic surgical residency at the University of California followed by the completion of an orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at the world- famous Kerlan-Jope Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles, CA. Dr. Dettling is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is a diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners.

Dr. Dettling's extensive orthopedic sports medicine training included assisting the team physicians for the LA Dodgers, LA Lakers, LA Kings, LA Galaxy, Anaheim Angels, Anaheim Mighty Ducks and USC football.
